Italy is famous for its history but it also has its quirky side. We found lots to laugh at or just smirk at during our time in this wonderful country. In Venice they have found a way to measure the flood levels more accurately. Some entrepreneur has found a new way to sell pasta. We couldn't understand the fascination with having pigeons (rats with wings) sit on you. Fat chance enforcing a no soccer rule in this country. Interesting sign for the Via dell' Amore in Cinque Terre which was closed due to a death by rockslide (not much love there). The Pisa McDonald's was full of goofy signs (would that happen back home?).
Michelangelo lives! Pisa is the ultimate silly photo op. 'When the moon hits your eye like a big ... We love the way English gets translated over here. What does it mean to get 'Jaked'? (And would they sell Mennowear?) Christmas brought to you by Mercedes. Would you stay at this hotel if you were from Germany (don't mention the war!)? We got a kick out of the strange Christmas light displays in the malls. Take a penguin for a skate! A circus at the Vatican, what a concept!
We realized just how perfect the Smart car is for parking in Europe. When it's time to text, the baby can walk. Overheard a centurion on his cell, "Julie, don't go, I said Julie, don't go." (Very inside joke.) Must be a market out there for pink Foosball tables. These Romans were freezing on this cold day in their costumes as they waited for people to pose with them (or at least warm them up). In Italy La Befana, a good witch, brings the presents so hang her from your tree! There are a gazillion poor guys running around Rome trying to sell scarves and goofy toys and these are the only two we ever saw actually making a sale. No matter how cold, it's always (?) a good idea to have your soup and cigarette outside (looks like a Winnipeg winter scene). Matthew was able to find a little bit of home in the grocery store. We hope this guy eventually gets his drum kit (and takes a few lessons!). We found a very lost pyramid in Rome.
