We spent most of our time in the city of London but managed to squeeze in a day trip to see some sights close to the city. We began our day in the country by visiting Windsor Castle which is the oldest castle still used as a residence by a monarch. Queen Elizabeth wasn't there to meet us (she hadn't shown up at Buckingham Palace to wave to us either) but we did get a great tour of the amazing 'apartments' of the castle. There was so much to see but we only had a limited time so before we knew it we were heading off to see Stonehenge. The fact that this rock formation is in an open field with traffic zooming by is kind of surreal. We walked around the rocks in a counterclockwise direction and everybody took turns taking pictures of each other in front of them. Years ago you could walk right up to them but now it is all carefully roped off. According to our guide questions like how these rocks were moved there and how they were lifted up onto each other have still not been answered definitively. Our last stop in the countryside was Oxford where we learned about the incredibly history of this university city. It was a long day of sightseeing but it was well worth it.
